“Custom” is a term that gets used a lot in the renovation and home building industry. Custom, by definition, sounds great! It’s something created that perfectly fits your home, design style, and needs. It’s also nice to know what is in your home is different from what your neighbor has next door.
“Custom” is an upgraded experience. Whether you are talking about custom cabinetry, custom built-ins, or an entire custom home, “custom: is often synonymous with “elevated” and, sometimes, expense.
As a custom homebuilder, we know that building a home the way you want it is priority. You will not find any two of our properties looking the same because all of our clients are different, have different desires, and require different needs from their home.
When considering making any part of your renovation custom, take these things into consideration:
Budget
Not every element in your home has to be custom. There are many great options out there for pre-made items like vanities, kitchen cabinets, wardrobes, and storage that already exist. You can find ways to customize a pre-made vanity by picking your own stone to lay on top, or even sanding the vanity down and repainting.
Priorities
Think about an area of your home in which you are considering going custom. Maybe it’s your kitchen cabinets. Prioritize what your needs are within your home. If you are very tall, you may want taller custom kitchen cabinetry to make your life easier. You may decide your money is better spent here than building a custom built-in drop zone by your front door. Think about how your family uses your house, what would add future value, and what your priorities are.
Craftsmen
Make sure that whoever is creating custom finishes in your home has the talent, knowledge, and experience to deliver these one-of-a-kind finishes. Not only should they be masters of their craft, they should also possess the skills needed to get the job done no matter the obstacles they run into. Look for a contractor with knowledge of what you are wanting to do, competency to complete the work, skills to deliver a great product, and the ability to provide evidence and examples of their past work.
Experience
A contractor needs to wear many hats when building or renovating a custom home. They need to be deeply involved from knowing the plans inside and out to knowing exactly what it will take to achieve the vision. When selecting a custom homebuilder, make sure you find a builder who is just as invested as you in creating a beautiful finished product that you will both will be proud of. Your custom homebuilder should have expertise and ideas about ways to make your home function well while keeping it customized entirely to you.
When you are building custom, you should have expectations that your builder always treat you as a custom client, not just another job. Here at Village Restoration & Custom Homes, we go above and beyond to ensure you get that level of personal experience and attention. We are here to help with the budget, priorities, and execution to achieve an end result to make all parties truly proud!
